Many people take their hearing for granted until it’s too late and they need a hearing aid in order to hear properly.  There are a few simple precautions one can take in order to save having to use a hearing aid while you are still young.

By using earplugs whenever possible around large volumes such as concerts, marching bands and even some theater productions or movies in which the sound is turned way up can save your hearing for many years.  The ear plugs do not harm your ear canal or eardrums and actually help to save the delicate nerve endings deep inside your inner ear.  In addition to leisure activities where noise is a concern, always use earplugs if you work in a factory where machines are very loud and can damage your hearing over a short period of time.

Many people do not consider their hearing health until it is too late or they believe their insurance will not cover something like a hearing test if they have not reached a certain age. However, hearing loss can affect even young children.  More and more teenagers are losing their hearing from listening to loud music with headphones and the new earbuds, which plays the music directly into the ear canal.

There are several new drugs and vitamins on the market that tout remarkable success with reversing hearing loss or making one feel young again.  Human growth hormones can help patients fight chronic fatigue, the side effects of fibromyalgia and strengthen the immune system among other things but it has not been shown to reverse the damage of hearing loss.

Another reason people shy away from getting a hearing test and subsequently a hearing aid is for vain reasons.  People do not like any type of aid that may show they have a weakness.  Although today’s hearing aids have come a long way from the large boxes that one used to strap to their chests with small wires going from the box to the ears, which is much more noticeable than a small hearing behind the ear or even the latest ear hearing aids.
